The role

You’ll own the visual direction of a small, specialist studio and make it excellent. This is a hands-on role: we expect you to create most of the art yourself. The rest is directing a bench of trusted freelancers, which you’ll inherit, build and manage. We don’t plan to hire more in-house artists, instead relying on you managing outsourcing as required. It’s a flat team with no large department to run, and no two projects look alike.

About us

Unusual Technologies is a small, growing team of specialists. We take on projects in any industry that needs technology, design or art, including museums, theme parks, video games and academia. We assemble the right team for each job, mixing in-house specialists with trusted freelancers.

We’re moving towards fewer, higher-value projects, and our visuals need to match.

What you’ll do

  • Own the high visual standard across every client and in-house project
  • Produce much of the work yourself with tools/AI, including UI/UX design, 2D art, 3D modelling and texturing, animation, pitch decks, website, etc.
  • Decide when a job needs outside help, then find, brief and manage freelancers, building and maintaining a trusted bench
  • Work closely with marketing to prototype new game concepts, test their market viability, and improve marketing materials, store pages etc
  • Establish and enforce good processes and pipelines, including project planning, task estimation and prioritisation, and file hygiene
  • Communicate and collaborate closely with the wider team and our clients

What we’re looking for

  • A strong eye across visual disciplines, both 2D and 3D
  • Experience producing art for real-time engines (ideally Unity) and an understanding of their constraints
  • High standards and a real focus on quality
  • The ability to make complex or technical subject matter clear and engaging
  • Comfort moving between very different project types
  • Practical, sensible use of AI tools, with the judgement to know when a person or another tool will do the job better
  • Disciplined and process-driven, holding yourself and others to the same standard
  • You keep up to date with new tools, processes and trends

Nice to have

  • VFX, technical scripting, sketching and concept, video editing
